The inspiration
"My worst fear is that my children won't remember me"
Paul Cooper
Paul was one of my closest friends through life, and was suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumour and given up to 2 years left to live.
To everyone this was devastating news, but it was inspirational to me.
There is something about being told about your own mortality that brings absolutely everything in life into perspective. Because i had experienced a similar event earlier in my life, although very different in reality, i understood some of the mindset that maybe others didn't. Or at least i thought this was the case.
Paul was diagnosed and being treated during the time of Covid and lock-down, which made the worst aspects of his whole situation amplified. Freedom was taken away from everyone at the time, so options of socialising, travel and entertainment was severely limited. It really sharpened the focus that you should not put off things for 'another day' as you may not be able to achieve your dream at all due to things out of yoru control.
As lockdown lifted in parts we did manage some time together. I invited him to see his beloved Manchester City with VIP treatment, we had some quality time together not knowing if it would be the last time it was possible to do such a thing.
Afterwards, we did something would have been too awkward for either of us to do in any other circumstances, but we had a hug and declared to each other "I want you to know i love you mate!"
We always knew we were close friends, we'd experienced many great times together but never actually said it. It was one of those times where you couldn't let embarrassment or pride get in the way. You had to be 100% sincere and not regret something you didn't do or say later. it felt very liberating and enlightening.
This, along with my previous personal experiences, led to the concept of the company. memories are everything, they far outlast any material items. Paul also declared something very poignant in a conversation. He was not worried about himself, he had accepted his own fate, his greatest fear was his children not remembering him as their dad, as they were only young at the time. Creating memories became very precious in any form, whether experiences, holidays, photos, videos, conversations or laughs.
His memory would live on with many people, long after his inevitable death.
